Late August is when kids ask for an ocean party. They've spent eight weeks in a pool, they watched something with sharks in it, and now the birthday has to be underwater. The request usually arrives about two weeks before the date.
Here's what actually exists for this, and where you'll have to improvise.
Shark Party is the one that's genuinely a shark theme
It's the real thing, not a blue plate with a fish on it. The dinner plates put a toothy great white against blue, gray, and red on heavyweight paperboard, 8 to a package. The luncheon napkins say JAW-SOME and come 16 to a package in 2-ply. There's a shark-shaped mylar balloon with a metallic finish that hangs like the shark is swimming across the room, which is the piece kids react to.
It also has the widest age range of anything in the kids lineup. Four year olds love sharks. So do eleven year olds. If the guest list is spread out, this is the safest ocean pick on the shelf.
There is no mermaid theme, so build one
Being straight about it: there isn't a mermaid set in stock right now. What there is happens to combine into a very good mermaid table, and honestly it looks better than most printed mermaid sets because nothing is shouting a cartoon face at you.
Start with Tie Dye Party. The pastel swirl of blue, pink, and yellow reads as water at a glance, and it's the closest thing to a watercolor sea print available. Layer in Butterfly Shimmer for the gold foil accents, which pass as scales and shine the way iridescent mermaid decor is supposed to. Sweet Dreams in pink, purple, and white fills in anywhere you want it softer.
Then pull teal, aqua, and pale pink from solid color tableware for the cups and the overflow plates. A mixed table built this way looks intentional rather than mismatched, because you picked the palette instead of letting a licensed print pick it for you.
Blue Silver Celebration when you want it calm
Not every ocean party needs a face on it. Blue Silver Celebration is blue with metallic silver, no characters, no theme text, and it works as deep water for an older kid who wants the vibe without the cartoon. It's also the easiest one to mix with anything else, because it's essentially a color scheme with a name.
Wild One Woodland gets used this way too, since the turquoise in it matches most ocean palettes even though the animals are entirely land-based. Use the solid pieces from it and leave the printed ones alone.
Late summer is the right window for this
An ocean party in February is a decorating exercise. In August it's just an accurate description of the day. You can run a sprinkler, hand out water balloons, or set out a shallow tub of water with plastic sea creatures for the little ones, and the theme does the work for you.
The pool angle is worth thinking about before you buy, though.
What not to buy for a water party
Don't put paper decorations anywhere near the water. That means the 3D centerpieces that come 2 to a package and the centerpiece fans that come 3 to a package, both printed paperboard, both wonderful and both ruined by one wet kid running past. Keep them on the cake table, ideally indoors or well back from the splash zone.
Skip a fabric or paper backdrop at a pool party for the same reason. Anything below waist height near water is going to get soaked, so put your decorating effort up high where it stays dry and still shows in photos.
