Twelve people confirmed. You're staring at a package of plates that says 8, doing the division in your head, and landing on "two packages."
That answer is wrong, and it's wrong in the direction that ruins the third quarter.
One plate per person is a myth
A watch party runs three hours minimum. People eat in waves: something on arrival, something at halftime, something in the fourth quarter when the chili finally comes out. Almost nobody keeps track of the plate they had an hour ago.
Plan on two plates per person. Twelve people is twenty four plates, which is three packages of 8 exactly. That's your number.
Four packages if you want a cushion. The fourth stays sealed and turns up in your closet the next time somebody says "my place is too small, can we do it at yours."
Napkins burn faster than anything else
Napkins come 16 to a package, 2-ply tissue, 6.5 inches square. That count sounds generous next to a plate package right up until you watch how they get used.
Wings, nachos, anything with dip: two napkins minimum, and people take a fresh one every trip back to the table. Three to four napkins per person across a full game is normal, not excessive.
Twelve people at four each is 48, which is exactly three packages. Buy three. If anything on your menu is sauced, buy four and don't think about it again.
Cups, and the marker that saves you a package
The 20 oz plastic cups come 8 to a package in #6 recyclable plastic. Twelve people means two packages if everyone keeps one cup, and three if they don't.
They don't. A cup gets set on a side table, forgotten during a goal line stand, and abandoned forever. Its owner gets a new one.
A permanent marker sitting next to the drinks fixes most of this. People write their name or draw something dumb on the side, and suddenly two packages is enough. It's the simplest fix in the whole setup and it's the one everybody skips.
The table cover is a dimensions problem, not a headcount problem
This piece has nothing to do with how many guests you have. Team table covers run 54 inches by 102 inches in mediumweight plastic, and what matters is the table underneath.
A standard 8 foot folding table is 96 inches long and 30 inches wide. The 102 inch length leaves about 3 inches hanging past each end, and the 54 inch width gives you a 12 inch drop on both sides. Clean, no tucking, no bunching.
On a 6 foot table at 72 inches, you get 15 inches of overhang at each end, which is either a nice drape or a nuisance depending on whether anyone is sitting there.
For twelve people you probably want two surfaces anyway. One for food, one for drinks, so nobody has to reach across a tray of wings to get ice.
The upsell to refuse
Don't let anyone push you to a case for a party of twelve. Cases run 96 plates and 192 napkins, and they exist for tailgate lots, church halls, and offices feeding an entire floor.
Twelve people will not make a visible dent in 192 napkins. You'll be storing that box through the playoffs of a season that hasn't started yet. Retail packages exist for exactly this size of gathering.
So the whole list for twelve people is short:
- Dinner plates, 8.75 inch heavyweight paperboard: 3 packages, 24 plates
- Luncheon napkins, 16 per package: 3 packages, or 4 if there's sauce
- 20 oz cups, 8 per package: 2 packages plus a marker, or 3 without one
- Table cover, 54" x 102": one per table, and plan on two tables
Everything on that list comes in your team's colors, and the well stocked lines right now include the Rams, Patriots, Broncos, Colts, Jaguars, Jets, Dolphins, Seahawks, Raiders, and Lions.
