Preseason football is on, nobody is taking it seriously, and that is exactly the point. Nothing is at stake yet, which makes it the only stretch of the year when you can think about hosting without also thinking about a specific game.
It's also when your team's stuff is still on the shelf.
Team printed items don't restock the way you'd expect
Solid color plates get made all year. A red plate in November is the same red plate from March.
Team logo items work differently. They're printed for the season, in a quantity decided months before anyone knew who'd be good. When a team runs out, it usually runs out until the following year. There's no midseason reprint waiting to rescue you in week eleven.

Buy for the season, not for the party
Most people buy for one game. They host, it goes well, and then they do the whole thing again three weeks later from a thinner selection.
If you host even a few times a year, work out roughly how many Sundays you're hosting and buy for all of them at once. Plates come eight to a package, napkins sixteen. Doing that arithmetic once in August beats doing it four separate times between now and January.
And if you host for real crowds, the same items come in cases. A case of napkins is a lot of napkins, but they don't expire and they store flat.
What can wait
Not everything needs buying now, and it's worth being honest about that.
- Solid color cups, plates, and cutlery. Always available, always the same. Buy them whenever.
- Generic footballs, goal posts, and field themed pieces. The football party supplies aren't tied to any one team's popularity.
- Anything you're only buying because it's on the page. Preseason optimism is real and it makes people over order.
Skip the team banner unless you have a wall that actually wants one. Banners get bought constantly and used once, then live in a closet next to the folding chairs.
The one thing worth grabbing first
If you buy nothing else this month, get the table cover for your team. It's the single biggest piece of team color you can put in a room, it makes the whole setup read as intentional, and it turns cleanup into balling up one sheet of plastic.
Everything else on the table can be a solid color pulled from the team palette. Nobody notices. The cover does the work.
A quick check before you order
Go look at what's already in your house. There's a decent chance last season's napkins are in a drawer somewhere, and the number of people who buy a second package of something they already own is higher than anyone admits.
